The meteoric rise of Prici Gyal Dem, a new face of Caribbean dancehall
An independent artist of Martinican origin, Prici Gyal Dem has quickly established herself as an essential voice in the Caribbean musical landscape. Navigating between different styles such as dancehall, rap, afrobeat and drill, this young woman of years conquers an ever-widening audience thanks to her energetic and committed pieces.
From Black Gyal to Prici Gyal Dem: the affirmation of an identity
Prici Gyal Dem has been immersed in music since a young age. It was only natural for her to turn to dancehall, a musical genre rooted in Caribbean roots. Under the pseudonym Black Gyal, she began to make a name for herself on the local scene in 2015, with tracks such as "Neg Mawon" that blend dancehall influences with political messages.
But it was in 2021 that she decided to assert her identity more firmly by adopting the name Prici Gyal Dem. "I chose this name because it better reflects who I am and where I come from," she explains. "Prici" refers to her first name, while "Gyal Dem" is a Jamaican term for women, particularly those from dancehall culture. A strong choice that allows her to fully embrace the dancehall tradition while bringing her own personal touch.
An eclectic artist
Since then, Prici Gyal Dem has continued to gain notoriety, delivering fiery stage performances and releasing hit tracks in different musical styles. Her fast flow and catchy melodies quickly set her apart in a male-dominated musical landscape.
With her explosive mix of fierceness, identity claims and Caribbean sounds, Prici Gyal Dem is establishing herself as a rising and essential figure on the independent Caribbean music scene. Whether it's dancehall, rap, afrobeat or drill, this versatile artist promises more great surprises in the months and years to come.
